Chikmagalur

Where coffee entered India, and still the reference cup.

The district where coffee entered India, and still the one that sets the reference profile for Indian arabica. Most of what we roast comes from here — Ratnagiri, Melkodige, Basankhan, Baarbara, Unnaki and the Kaimara belt all sit inside this one district.

240 km from Bengaluru, where the plateau breaks

Chikkamagaluru district sits on Karnataka's western edge, where the Deccan plateau drops into the Western Ghats. Coffee is concentrated in the Malnad taluks along that break — Mudigere, Koppa, Sringeri, Narasimharajapura and western Chikkamagaluru — with the high ground, the Baba Budan range and Mullayanagiri at 1,930 m, sitting above the estates rather than under coffee itself. Estates occupy the slopes and valleys roughly 700–1,500 m, arabica in the 1,000–1,500 m band, robusta in the warmer pockets below.

Blossom showers, then the wait

The crop depends on two smaller events before the main harvest: blossom showers around March, which trigger flowering, and backing showers a few weeks later, which set the fruit. A late or thin blossom thins the whole season's harvest. Picking runs roughly November to February — arabica first, late November through January, robusta following into March — with selective hand-picking the norm since cherries on the same block ripen unevenly under shade.

Cocoa, toasted nut, soft acidity

Chikmagalur arabica reads as a cocoa-and-nut coffee with soft acidity, medium to heavy body and a long sweet finish. Fragmentation shapes the supply too: small growers vastly outnumber the old large estates, which is why the district produces both anonymous bulk coffee sold by grade and named single-estate lots with the processing on the label — both off the same slopes.

What we buy

6 on the shelf today

“This is our home district, in the sense that most of the estates we've built direct relationships with sit inside it. The page exists to explain why: the shade, the elevation band and the fragmentation into small named farms are what make single-estate Chikmagalur coffee possible at all.”
