  1. Where it grows

Ammikulavi Estate, in Tamil Nadu. The trees stand at 1,300 to 1,400 m. Robusta is mostly grown much lower and hotter, so that is high ground for the species. This lot is canephora, and it is the first coffee in our robusta series.

  2. The ferment

After picking, the lot was sealed away from air and fermented for 96 hours. That is four days. The black grape and the aged rum in the cup were made in that time, before the coffee was dried and well before we roasted it.

  3. How we roast it

We roast it to Depth 33, medium light, to hold the fermentation sweetness in place. A darker roast would cover it. The body comes out syrupy and the finish long, with no harshness behind the intensity. Every bag is roasted to order in New Delhi, after you buy it.

  4. What to expect

On filter it leads with black grape, with aged rum and dried fig behind it. As espresso the cup turns to molasses and dark cacao. It is a heavy, sweet coffee, not a light one. If you want something tea-like, this is not it. If you have written robusta off, start here.

Ask us

05questions
Is Obsidian bitter like other robusta?

It is not meant to be. The 96-hour ferment builds sweetness, and the medium light roast holds it there, with no harshness behind the intensity. On filter it leads with black grape and aged rum. As espresso it is molasses and dark cacao. Heavy and sweet, not bright.

Does robusta have more caffeine than arabica?

Generally yes, roughly twice as much by weight as arabica. We do not publish a per-cup figure for this lot, so if caffeine matters to you, start with a smaller cup.

Can I get Obsidian ground, and in 1 kg?

Yes to both. Pick the size, 250 g or 1 kg, and the grind when you add it to the cart: whole bean, home or commercial espresso, South Indian filter, AeroPress, moka pot, pour-over, Chemex, French press or cold brew. Whole bean keeps longest.

How fresh will it be?

Roasted to order and dispatched within 1–2 working days. Delivery across India usually takes 3–6 days. Shipping is free on every order.

What if I do not like it?

Coffee is a fresh product, so an opened bag cannot be returned. On your first order, tell us within 7 days of delivery and we will swap it once for a different coffee, free. If it arrives damaged or wrong, write to us within 48 hours.
