Gemblary sits in the Shevaroys, the isolated hill massif that rises off the Salem plain — cooler and drier than Karnataka's Malnad, with cherry that ripens more slowly and a cup that reads cleaner than most people expect from Tamil Nadu.
The estate has been cared for by the same family since 1977 and is now in its fourth generation. Coffee grows under natural shade from jackfruit, silver oak, mandarin orange and other native trees — the classic Yercaud mixed canopy.
Ripe cherries are selectively hand-picked and screened before processing. The medium-dark roast we run on this lot builds body and caramelisation without burying the fruit: dried apricot, caramel and cocoa on filter, hazelnut praline and dried fig as espresso.
Nothing from this farm on the shelf this week. The relationship outlasts any one harvest.
